Benitoite is an extremely rare natural gemstone, that was first discovered in the year 1906. It was named Benitoite because it is only available from one source in the world, San Benito County, California. The mine has now been closed! The color of Benitoite is Blue to violetish Blue, there is also an even more rare pink Benitoite. Benitoite has the light dispersion of diamond with the color of fine sapphire, making it a very sought after collectors gemstone. The hardness of Benitoite is 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. Benitoites over 1 carat are very rare.
