Emerald is a variety of the mineral species beryl.  The color of this gemstone is a light green to dark green, to a very bluish Green.  Emerald is probably the most well known of the beryl family.  It has a hardness of 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, making Emerald a durable gemstone.
